Mahanagar Gas Limited launches CNG-fuel kit for two-wheelers

Words by Yash Sunil

Following the government’s footsteps to switch to alternative fuel rather than using petrol and diesel, Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has launched two-wheelers which are powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).  MGL have partnered up with M/s Eco fuel to develop CNG kits which can be fitted to the two-wheelers.

At present two CNG kit manufacturers, M/s ITUK and M/s Lovato have received approval from institutions such as the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and the International Center for Automotive Technology (ICAT) to manufacture the CNG kits. The kits come with two cylinders which have a capacity of 0.6kg in each tank. Customers can travel up to a distance of 120kms to 130kms per kg between fuel stops and also reap approximate benefit of running cost of 60 paise per kilometer.

The market for these kits has seen a huge boom due to the ever increasing fuel prices and this move by the government could pave a path for customers to opt using alternative fuel which will allow the people to cope with inflation and help reduce pollution levels in the long run.

At the launch Honorable Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Petroleum and Natural Gas Shri. Dharmendra Pradhan said, “That the launch of CNG fueled two wheelers will give an opportunity to more than 36 lakhs two wheelers running in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to opt for this eco-friendly fuel. In the last few years CNG powered vehicles have grown in Mumbai Metropolitan Region at a CAGR of over 70% given the fuel economics and eco-friendly nature of CNG.”

The two-wheelers which have got an approval from the ARAI, Pune and ICAT, Gurgaon that are compatible with the CNG kits offered by M/s ITUK & M/s Lovato are the Hero Maestro, Hero Pleasure, Hero Duet, Honda Activa 125, Honda Dio, Mahindra Duro DZ, Mahindra Gusto, Suzuki Access, Suzuki LET’S, Suzuki Swish, TVS Scooty Zest, TVS Wego, Piaggio Vespa, Yamaha Alpha, Yamaha Fascino, Yamaha Ray, TVS Jupiter.
